Archives Report
By Stan Piet
As part of our current newsletter
to members we are reinstituting our former column on activities involving our
archive collection. Much has changed and improved since our last reporting and we'll bring you
that information along with reporting on recent donors and their donations in future articles.
With this report we would like to focus
on the recent relationship we have established
with Ms. Debbie Rollins Franks. Debbie's father was Temple Joyce, a recognized designer
and later co-founder of the Berliner-Joyce
Aircraft Corporation located in Dundalk, Maryland.
B-J built aircraft for the US military in the
early 30s. Debbie has located numerous items from her father's aviation career, including photos
and artifacts, a pilot log book, and a
quite unusual commemorative medal from his service on the prestigious
Gugggenheim Aeronautics Committee in 1930. We are currently cataloging the donated materials
and will be working towards preparing these, and other, items related to the Berliner-Joyce
story for a display in our new Maryland Aviation Room. We greatly appreciate Debbie and
her family visiting us at Airfest and we look
forward to bringing to the public the story of
Temple Joyce's significance to the aviation history
of Maryland.
