Despite the MB-2's triumph over the battleship, 1921 was a grim year for Martin. The firm shrank from almost 400 employees to a core of 90 before the Navy came to the rescue. Displaying a remarkable lack of ill will towards battleship-slayers, the Navy ordered four experimental models from Martin between 1922 and 1924, keeping the new factory afloat.
